Cashu is not Bitcoin; we need Lightning in the Signal vanilla app.
True, but by that logic, lightning is not Bitcoin, as it's not on the main chain. It's not perfect, but it's an improvement. I'll take what I can get.
Lightning is not dependent on a centralized mint that can rug you at any moment.
The same is true for most exchanges, yet people use them, and then with any significant amount of Bitcoin, move it to a self-custody wallet.
I don't see the problem here. What kind of nut (pun intended) would leave hundreds of dollars worth of Bitcoin in a cashew mint wallet?!
I totally agree, I’m a bit salty we don't have zaps on vanilla signal, hence my comments.
Oh yeah I agree that would definitely be great. I think Signal's requirements for a currency in their payment section is that it be a fast settlement AND private.
Bitcoin is not fast or private
Monero and zcash are not fast
Lightning is not private
Mobilecoin is fast AND private
Ecash is fast AND private
But since mobilecoin is too unknown and not easily acquired on mainstream exchanges no one uses it.
Ecash can be easily turned into lightning and then into bitcoin. Its the obvious next best option.
I agree with almost everything you said, except about the Cashu, because if I were Signal, I wouldn't want to explain to my users that their coins are gone from the app. That would happen if the mint rugged them, whether it was a random mint or a dishonest Signal employee rigging the official Signal mint.
Valid point. I'm sure there are security measures of some kind that could be put in place to mitigate these issues, like running the mint in a secure enclave where signal employees can access it. Or maybe a balance limit so no one account can hold too much.
The “too much” is very subjective, and I don’t see how enclaves can help with rugging; they do work for privacy.
Well I'm not an expert so I could be wrong here but I think once the mints are set up they are fully automated. So putting it in an enclave, would not only allow deposits and withdraws to be private but prevent anyone from stealing funds even an employee. But again I'm just think about this from a high level overview. There could be unforseen things I'm not accounting for.
