This is just sad to read. I feel sorry for Damus users. While Zaps are not the only reason you should use Nostr, Zaps are part of our identity as we have been building a value for value economy for 6+ months on Nostr. Opt out. Use Android. View quoted note →

I'm surprised people still don't use Android. I've been using android for years. Open source is the way to go. Open source = freedom. Just like computer operating systems. Linux = freedom. JUST LIKE CURRENCY, BITCOIN = FREEDOM!! 💜🧡
I cannot imagine if we could not found any avoiding solution. At least by principle! Fuck up Apple, fuck all monopolist. So if you want really free, avlid any dependence from monopol corps. Regarding phones yku should avoid not only Apple, but Google too. IMHO use "degoogled" Android, there are predesigned and/or preinstalled mobiles on the market.
It’s not so bad. It seems like @jb55 is adding an extra tap to zap. We’ve only had one tap zaps for a few weeks. Damus on iPhone is important. It’s the most popular phone in the world, and we’re not going to convince most people to trade their iPhone so it’s easier to zap on an protocol they never heard of.

That was one of their better moments. They do occasionally have them.
You are right. BTW: ot all banking apps, but most of them. So you have to use two mobiles 😊 Or a better solution to use webapps, like the nostr webclients on mobile On the other hand I don't use even banking apps. Intentionally. This is an another kind of dependency. So if ylu use them, you can forget the word "privacy".
That's true if you look at smartphone brand, but if you look at platform market share, Android has 80% of the world's mobile OS. People in the world that need censorship resistant communication use Android far more than they do iOS. That said, it would be a great disservice to the world if iOS did not have Damus. Will needs to do what he can to make sure that iOS has Damus available. It's very important.

I won’t be leaving that ecosystem. To me it’s no different than anything else any company or government has tried to block. I’ve already moved to Snort for most of my usage. They tried to make us stop torrenting. They tried to make us stop downloading music. Even Xbox went PWA for now. Quiet resistance has moved the needle in interesting ways. Snort + NWC means Apple cannot stop zaps. #grownostr until we’re actually a threat and everyone will want their platform to be best for users to use it. The most effective way to fight this is going to be making Nostr insanely great. When everyone is here, Apple just like everyone else will be on board and act like they always were. Nature of the beast.
That’s the one thing that makes me hesitant with graphene. I have an insulin pump that is run by my phone. Would not be able to use if I switched to that OS. Could still use the pump independently but would be much more of a hassle.
Agreed -- not a fan of Apple ----Android All Day---- Apple is not intuitive by any stretch; it's a learned interface---can't turn on flashlight without a users manual and classes from experts (ha!) --- 'walled garden' approach and anti-privacy etc. --not great --- solid build quality though!
I know its fun and easy to attack Apple and just tell people to use Android but in reality that's not helpful. There are a lot of people who enjoy Apple products and do not want to deviate from them for many reasons. We still want to include these people in the #grownostr movement. We need to change Apple's mind. Sadly this is much easier said than done.
The Graphene is a bit risky. If you have never changed the stock ROM to custom, I can advise that start with LineageOS. If you want to use Google "things" then you should install GFS too (a pico or nano version will be enough I think). For details see the lineageos website. But if you are brave you can use LineageOS for MicroG (separate website). MicroG is a "rewritten"/google services pack, it uses spoofed ID-s. And you don't need gmail account.
My father still runs a back up phone from 2008, the battery lasts for days
It's a little frustrating how much he is clinging on to iOS instead of just making a web app. Like I understand he probably only knows Swift, but like anyone can learn JavaScript/React.
I hate that Apple act the way they do but just neglecting the entire Apple user base is simply stupid and naïve. It’s good to see that @jb55 and a lot of other people fight them on their shit non-sense policies and keep on building!
That said, Will said in a recent note that he will continue his work on a multi platform client. He did start working on that a while back with a Rust+EGUI stack.
People can’t fathom reasons why not to write a web app except there are many: the web is slow and bloated. There are tons of security issues with putting your key in your browser. Noone installs PWAs except nerds. I don’t know why people are upset because I’m not writing a web app when there are like 10 nostr web apps. People should go use those if the web is so good. I much prefer native non-web-stack solutions that still work inside browsers. I am already building one of those.
Would it be possible to relegate the key as a recovery key so that one could have a separate username/login for a web app? The recovery key could generate new logins…this might be something on the protocol level though.
Most of them that have criticized are alphabetical plants that have narratives and agendas… They are change agents. Be advised and defend your heart and mind. They are clever. Tactics are many! 🤡🌎 You are kicking a$$ and taking names! Make your own decisions and don’t look back at the steersman practicing cybernetics on all of us who are unaware. Don’t let them get the optimal grip of control over you! You are persona non grata… 🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂🫂
This is a bad take. There’s more reasons than just programming languages to not build a web app. And he’s more than capable.

It’s amazing that this guy couldn’t be bothered enough to even look at the repo to know that Damus is not only written in swift.

Hard agree that a native option is always needed. I don’t know rust, so I’ve been playing with Blazor Hybrid for that very reason. The goal is code that runs everywhere.
And now wet have Nextcloud, which is the open source online ecosystem. You self just and control your own cloud synchronization, collsboration and file sharing. Nextcloud gives you - Contacts - Calendar - File sharing - Video Conferencing - Document Sharing & Collaboration - Protect Planning & Collaboration - Note syncing - Private Messaging App w/video & audio calls - Password Management & Sync - Tasks (includes KanBan/Sprint board tasks) - Forms Plus many, many more, such as - Photos - Cookbook - Map
You are spot on. Web Apps are good in some situations, horrible in others. Yes, you can make anything run on almost anything, but with web platform it's going to be more pain (not always). Ignore the noise, it's coming from people in the process of learning...
