Only in a very cursory level. Should I be running away?

No, don’t run away. I would just point out a few things:
1. The 22 cards of the Major Arcana of the Tarot map to the pathways of the Tree of Life of Kabbalah. Understanding the Sephiroth of the Tree of Life is more than likely going to improve your understanding of the Tarot.
2. The concept of “Tarot readings” does not strike me as being consistent with the Tree of Life’s purpose as a teaching/learning tool. I may be wrong but randomly pulling archetype cards from a deck is not an indication of what is going on in a person’s life.
3. I think it is more reasonable to consider the scenario in which insiders were quizzing themselves on the Tarot one time and an outsider caught them and asked what they were doing. The insiders basically provided a mixed bag of truth and lies. That way the outsider remains an outsider and the outsider goes away satisfied with the teachings given.
I think esoteric practices often have a legitimate version and at least one illegitimate version. Example: palm reading. Crease palmistry is mostly bs. Real palm reading requires a magnetoreceptive reader with a working knowledge of the subtle nuances visible in the aura.
