I am not reading / using Nostr DMs as long as they are not encrypted.

We can correct your right now and assure you that every nostr DM is encrypted. There's other issues.
If you try dark wisp by @utxo the webmaster 🧑💻 you'll have a sensible default setup. I think it does not even support unencrypted DMs

DMs were never unencrypted. As Vitor already wrote, NIP-04 had a weak point with metadata.
You're thinking of ActivityPub DMs. NIP 17 DMs are pretty good (no post-compromise security/forward secrecy, and vulnerable to spam to a certain extent).
