Perhaps users should consider posting to the relay as renting a billboard for display, with the user deciding whether to continue paying for the display. It is essential to save the note locally, as the relay is merely a display medium. View quoted note →

Indeed. Relays are businesses. You can ask a business to put your poster up in their shop window.
the first epoch of nostr has focused almost exclusively on clients, but the clients have not hardly made the effort to enable relays as a paid service, and the big funders of nostr dev have not seen many relay devs because we are the hidden cinderellas , only relay devs who also do front end get any attention from anyone this is going to changne in this second epoch... too many of the problems plaguing nostr now are relay related
Not good enough with storing locally. Then I can only find my own old notes. I want to be able to search the entire knowledge of entire universe within less than a second. So... there must be a way of monetization for public relays that do not delete anything. Which is pretty simple - send me monthly invoices and I'll pay them. And block service for my npub if I don't pay.
I just tried out @Keychat and the thing I took away most is how much I love the concept of ecash to post on nostr. I will happily run an open public relay if each message came with a small amount of ecash (from a mint(s) the relay operator defined) to me in each message. I also think users will happily pay this fee. There's about to be a lot of new Bitcoiners that have never made a Bitcoin transaction at all. Let's give them the coolest reason to use Bitcoin!
