People are people. Which is to say they will do all kinds of things and follow all kinds of strange teachings.

It's deceptive BC it suggests people are following a priest of a pope or a deacon but that is never the case (or shouldn't be) it the same cheep shot as saying Catholics worship Mary (they don't) but maybe someone said it wrong or maybe some is confused. But it has never been the teaching of the Church to follow a priest or a pope or worship Mary.
