As bitcoin crosses $100,000 there are still people out there, who absolutely should know better, who are directing users to buy it from KYC Gulag Services. Out of one side of their mouths, they complain about censorship, government overreach and tyranny, but out of the other they openly promote bad services that abuse users. Why? Worst of all, they do this to people who are new to bitcoin, giving them a completely false impression that it is a requirement for you to identify yourself to use bitcoin. What is wrong with these people? What's wrong with them is that their thinking is incomplete, and they have a slave mentality, brought about by years of being in opposition. Also, many of the services people recommend are USA only, which is yet another arbitrary restriction. Why is it so hard for people to think? They simultaneously want bitcoin to change the world, but refuse to help it do that, by recommending inferior services that will not move that ball forward. I'm sorry to report, dear reader, that it will always be like this; there is an upper limit to the imaginations of the majority of people, even very clever and expert ones, that prevents them from connecting the dots. It's a tragedy that people who also have large platforms don't take that responsibility seriously. But there it is. Not to worry; bitcoin is going to spread and dominate globally without them, just as it reached $100,000 without their aid. image

Buy no KYC in Azte.co, Bisq, HodlHodl, Robosats, local meetups or other p2p marketplaces. Never report to the tax "authorities". Save, use and replace. Simple, really. KYC Bitcoin bought in exchanges is worse than a CBDC.

like the nym// gd point but MIX@meatmeetuP/ is a good line & irl advice//
I don't think this is fair, but maybe the people you are talking about are more lazy than me. Firstly, I always go for the non-custodial wallet at first if I can. I don't have time to wait for you to sign up for an exchange and wait 48h due to regulations. But the problem is that most people would rather jump to the "where do I go to buy it myself?". They don't want to sit with you, they want some homework that they may or may not do and walk away. The other thing is what do you recommend? I would personally recommend robosats for starters and bisq for larger buyers, but it is always disheartening to see people behave like any small extra steps they need to take is too much, while if a regulated company asks for their first born, they'll happily ask where to sign. How much of the risks do you explain? You should never mention bitcoin in the reference when sending cash to another peer. Worst case, you get yours and your peer's accounts closed. That is scary AF. In the UK, robosats is super unpopular, but in the EU it's great. So if you have Wise or Revolut, its easy to get you on KYC-free bitcoin, but if not, its not so easy and then you get questions like "why am I doing things that are controversial here?" As simple as it sounds to show someone to use the objectively most frictionless way to buy bitcoin, it is subjectively more friction for most people and you find yourself trying to radicalise this person in order to convince them that giving away your personal and private information is not frictionless and using anonymising tools is a reusable skill that is hollistically much more frictionless.

That three letter word “Buy” leaves out a multitude of sins. That’s the problem. It’s being worked on.

“Large” is not a number. “Large” to who? This is the problem with the Orange and Purple People; they’re parochial, insular and navel gazing. It’s not a general problem; it’s a problem with them and contained in them, and so, it will be overcome very quickly once all the pieces are in place. And it’s all coming together. Isn’t that special?

I knew you were from INGSOC when you used the word “fair”. I recommend azte.co since you can buy it essentially instantly and it’s private. Most of the people on earth are not westerners with thousands to spend on bitcoin in the hopes that it will go up. There are billions of people who all use mobile phones and who need bitcoin just like Geordies do. Very soon, buying bitcoin will not be controversial at all; just like buying a bottle of Guiness. This time can’t come too quickly, so that the constant withering service permuting and other guff that has plagued bitcoin since the early forums where people competed to see how many services they could chain together to buy bitcoin were “a thing”. The best time to be in bitcoin is now. This has always been true, just like the best time to have money is always now. When people wake up to this and stop thinking about bitcoin like its a special thing, we will have all crossed the Rubicon with red capes on. SPQR!
True. KYC sats are cheaper and easier to get for beginners though. Also, I refer newbs to inferior services too because they’re often superior in terms of UX. Unfortunately, there is not only an upper limit of imagination but an absolute limit of competence in using technology for many. It’s a painful balancing act.

It’s an opless fancy. And your assumptions (thankfully) don’t impinge on reality, Baz.
I try to onboard using the easiest methods possible. Get on Strike, Coinbase, Kraken, etc and buy some to play with. If I start to talk about KYC, custodial, lightning, etc etc it really confuses people who are new to the tech. The quicker they learn while in the game, the quicker they can become self governable and understand the full scope of the tech.
Another obtuse post from a famously holier than thou out of touch product placement whore. Always an enigma wrapping himself in a riddle and condemning common folks for ‘buying’ Bitcoin. You’ll never do it right. Just swap dollars for corn when and how you can.

INGSOC: its smell can be smelled even over Internets. Skunk in profile…well, at least you’re warning everyone in advance. BURN THE INCENSE, SPRAY THE PERFUMES, THE AIR IS BEFOULED. But seriously…why bother?
As I remembered. 2-of-3 was an old protocol for Bisq, discontinued as it gave way to risky scams in case the 3rd signer colluded with a dishonest trader.
Interesting. This might be another area like nostr clients where I'm better off just telling people what's out there without recommending anything in particular
