Opt-out of Google entirely. Ungoogled chromium and brave are not acceptable compromises. Google is EVIL. Do not support them by using any browser that uses their engine. Firefox (and its forks) are not perfect but they are still the last refuge for a private open web. View quoted note →

The "*wolf" browsers are pretty good - Firefox based. #badwolf #librewolf
I am struggling with this decision. Are we sure we can't "capture" Blink and make it thrive with a completely open source, privacy-oriented, corporate-free community? I have an eye on Cromite lately: I would like to listen to @fiatjaf opinion on this regard.
Funding != developing The trade off is clear to everyone: firefox defaults to Google search. No other strings attached as evidenced by firefox's better support for ad and track blocker extensions.
Right, it's no secret that Google/Alphabet (and Meta, Microsoft, Amazon, ...) are evil. De-Googling is definitively a great thing to do, and I did that too almost two years ago as well. The problem is that because of Google's antics, Chrome/ium is, right now, easily the most supported browser (engine) out there. So whilst de-googled Chromium, Brave, Vivaldi and friends don't seem like the best options, they strike a great compromise between having a working, good experience on the web and keeping yourself private. There is, since years now, a new browser engine in development, called Servo: It started as a Mozilla product but... yeah, their graveyard keeps growing. Something-something about detaching from Mozilla and becoming its own thing etc... I wish it was as easy as just using Firefox to run away from Google entirely, but sadly this just isn't a thing. And, there are Google Services that are - at present - neigh irreplaceable like Youtube. LibreTube/NewPipe, Piped, Invidious etc. are the best way to use it, but under the hood, they still use Youtube one way or another. Hopefuly, in the future, Google either sees competition or regulations that force them to change some of their ways or create the opportunity for better and more private alternatives to arise. But as it stands right now, you can do some things, but there will always be a downside. A coin has two sides, always. Much like a sausage has two ends. :) There'll be a way, eventually - it just isn't here right now. Fingers crossed tho! ^.^ #optimism
None, all browsers are trash the "web" is just Google's playground. But I use Ungoogled Chromium. I've used Firefox and Vivaldi before.
I've also used that nice keyboard-based browser @jb55 uses for a couple of months (I forgot the name), it was actually the best of all the choices above, but it failed to render way too many pages (it just displayed an error instead of rendering anything), so I had to stop. The fact that it fails to render so many pages is a direct consequence and a proof of the fact that the web is broken.
I created a vimium fork called vimium+ at one point. I’m obsessed with making every interface vi-key compatible. On my nixos desktop environment i never needed to use a mouse.
It just added numeric link hint completion instead of a fixed set of characters, so you could narrow down based on the text in the link. I believe they eventually implemented this but for a year only vimium+ had it
fwiw i did at least PR it first they just didn’t accept it

I never used Chrome, never trust it, always used firefox but it starts pushing it luck with forced update thing. still looking for a good search engine, if you have one share it.
For my personal use, It's a Japanese laptop without Chrome pre-installed, I use Firefox for browser with customizeable, animated themes, tons of settings and privacy-laden Firefox extensions. Pretty decent compared to all the others in the game. I tried Brave but it kept crashing so Firefox still is, for me
A search powered by sats instead of advertisements (like DVMs) won't be a default in Firefox, or likely even considered, while there is funding from Google. Mozilla has explored other options, but I still think Google is the largest source. It is certainly influential to development.
There is no guarantee your search is not being tracked unless you take active adversarial measures. Changing the business model from ads to pay-per-query might improve the incentives, but it offers no guarantees.
#Bromite was a one time great de-googled browser which lacks all the crypto-💩#Brave comes with. Its great it was revived through the #Cromite fork and hope it continues to be developed. From #Firefox based browsers apparently #Mull is a good one. For desktop #LibreWolf is a nice privacy oriented fork. #TorBrowser is also a hardened Firefox browser. I have no experience with #Mullvad which is unrelated to #Mull browser.
#Bromite was and still is my favorite regardless being outdated. Will be substituted by #Cromite but not instantly. Maybe its me but the only downside I have met with it is its unable to erase history on exit. I have to do it manually, #Brave has the edge here. I cant stand #Brave being super private but constantly talking to a miriad of own servers. Something seems wrong to me with this super hyped browser.
