What could I do to help prevent any group from "unilaterally" enforcing potentially harmful changes? Just run as many nodes as possible?
Spinning up multiple nodes doesn’t do much. The important steps are to run your own node and hash with your own miner. And speak out when you see overreach.

The good news this chart depicts that nobody is talking about for this debate is that only 17% of node runners are staying up to date with the latest version of core.
That percentage drops to 2% if you want to be super precise 😉
