He hasn't been given a life sentence, he's been placed in prison at the orders of a judge for "contempt of court" because he refuses to agree with the claim that he's done anything wrong.

If he purges his contempt of court, and complies with orders not to visit the school he worked at, he can leave prison, but he refuses to do that.
Good. That would be absolutely absurd. Although i wouldn't be too shocked if some lefty, LGBTQ-supporting judge gave him 10+ years.
It's really quite an incredible case, because the longer it goes on, the more attention it gets internationally.
It's such a bad look for the Irish judiciary.
