I know it’s not breaking news but movies today can’t touch the movies of old. I just finished rewatching Gangs of New York and I’m thoroughly convinced you could pick any director and any actors today, give them 500 million dollars and they wouldn’t come close to that kind of quality. I know we’re all bitcoiners but is the problem really just fiat or is it something deeper?

It's politics of hollywood & the MPAA they set the standards, limits, & benefits. What we need is to end the monopoly which is hollywood having the final words on how what is approved on screen production.
Gangs of NY isn't that old, honestly
Yeah exactly, but it’s definitely a different era where the movies were actually worth a shit. And there were tons of them! 10s-100’s of movies that a movie today would have zero chance of holding up to.
Something deeper. Culture is changing, education is weakening, the craft is growing shallow creatively as it becomes a short money race.
Not nearly as polished but I’ve been enjoying amateur cinema lately.
I think the Bitcoin autists would say those problems are cause by fiat but I hear you. Definitely doesn’t help everyone can just pirate movies these days, that’ll knock back any incentive to spend a shit load on high quality work. Just throw out high volumes of slop to keep the normies on their subscriptions.
I don't even watch movies anymore. Always disappointed. I thought it was just me getting old.
Definitely isn’t just you! Maybe the good stuff will come back some day
The art of storytelling gets lost. Plus, people have too short attention spans now to be able to follow any complex or incoherent storyline. Movies became simply entertainment instead of a form of art.
I don't disagree with your last point.
I prefer to watch movies made before 1990. Even older, the better.
