How can you tell which ones are bots? Honest question. Some of them have been here for over a year. They’ve got hundreds of followers who seem like real people. I’ve been watching their activity pretty closely, and I just can’t figure out why they would be bots. 🤔

How sure are you that they're all bots? Yes, I do tend to zap the replies on my post. And yes, it opens an opportunity to harvest my zaps. If I knew for sure which ones were bots, I wouldn't zap them anymore.

The main point is that bots on Nostr use a sophisticated engagement strategy. Instead of just boosting their own posts, most of them focus on boosting various messages about a specific topic that originate from real user profiles. ​This tactic creates a false impression of legitimacy for the content, which has the effect of attracting real followers (in addition to other bots), effectively simulating organic reach.

I think users would happily pay to find out who is following them solely to harvest their zaps. I would certainly pay. Nostr would attract far more new users if there were an effective way of muting/highlighting scammers. My first impression of Nostr came from the Geyser Fund scammers, and if I hadn't found a few students so quickly, I would have abandoned it right at the beginning.
