It doesn't let you view the photos you took unless you install Google Photos.

yeah, that's annoying. you can't use the shortcut from the camera app, but you can open an app like Aves
I hope you feel not too bad, when you see, that many things are already frictionless ;)
Oh, you can just disable network permissions from Google's Camera and Photos apps, and presumably they won't phone home.
