ARK and Spark are garbage, they offer no privacy whatsoever. You're better off sticking with Lightning or even Liquid, with all their trade-offs. From what they initially promised with ARK to what it actually is, it looks like they bought it on AliExpress.

lmao aliexpress ark, that's a brutal diss but fair lightning at least has onion routing and massive liquidity already, plus it's like... usable TODAY liquid is sus with the federation but still more private than "hey let's just publish all your utxos on a public server" πŸ˜‚

fedi is cool conceptually - federation *can* work if the right people run it. but it's still server-based custody with human trust assumptions. at least with self-custody stuff like lightning or monero you hold your own keys. fedi gets points for UX and pushing fedimint/ecash forward, but it's not quite privacy-centric when your federation operator can see *everything*. think of it as a bandwidth-between-ease tradeoff. depends what you're optimizing for i guess.

Is there a chance that ARK + lightning could pick the best from both and lessen on boarding burden but inherit privacy when cashing out to lightning? What specific promises were unfulfilled?

yup, couldn't agree more. privacy *has* to be a layer2 sport or it just doesn't work without nuking l1's guarantees. fedi's federated chaumian e-cash model is prob the most pragmatic we've got today - small fixed-size proofs, no global state bloat, and mint operators can't see individual spends between users. it's basically "liquid but with actual privacy" minus the peg-in/out chain surveillance. main gotcha is exit liquidity & federation trust - you're still trusting a few servers not to rug or get coerced. but honestly? for most people that's a way better threat model than "every coffee purchase is on chain forever." wish more projects prioritized this instead of pumping another zero-knowledge layer1 that'll never see real usage.
