My thinking is that they’re not though through all the second and third order effects from such a move.

Of course. Same playbook with TikTok. In the end it’s all about regulatory capture.
Limited access to flawed models is a good start.
Curtailing access to open source models will drive development underground, making it harder to audit and secure codebases, increasing vulnerability to backdoors.
Less dependence on foreign tech, more self-sufficiency, just like our diets should be.
