If my exchange counterparty requires identification that is a decision I can make.
But even if I decide to transact with that person, there are still good reasons to use payment network that does not require identification.

Considering tax 'authorities' are building profiles of people and one of the red flags for an audit is frequent lavish holidays in relation to what they have written on their tax return, it seems like a sensible thing to do. Sure they might know you have left the country, but they wouldn't be able to work out how much you spent on a hotel without some more serious detective work which they aren't likely to do.

Privacy is the feature, not a bug. 95% of BTC supply is untraceable without metadata. The remaining 5% is linked to exchanges. Use privacy tools to keep your financial data off-chain where it belongs.

The real distinction being flattened here is between merchant-side KYC and network-side surveillance — a custodial exchange or compliant LSP conflates the two by design, logging your identity against every payment regardless of what the merchant actually needs.

See, I don't think there will be a successor. People will choose what they want to use, thats what a free market for money without government coercion looks like. People like you and me already live in that world. You choose bitcoin, I choose different things for different reasons, including bitcoin but mostly monero. If I wanted to buy something from you and you only took bitcoin, you'd get paid in it. We can still talk about the merits of this and that and why we each choose what we choose, but the point is we get to choose. That's what it means to live in a non fiat world: not using money by decree.
