The urban renewal continues. Fescue grass is up from seed. This was roto-tilled 5x and 75 gallons of garbage was cleaned up during that ptocess-broken glass, insulation, bits of house, broken toys, needles, you name it. Garden space now has 6” layer of reclaimed wood chips for mulch and weed suppression. image

The more I see of the System, the more I believe in the value of breaking away and building in small, dense silos. The big S System has ceased to be market rational and no longer allocates goods and services to their highest and best use.

Wire fence to keep cats out of my newly planted strawberries. This is an old fire ring, lined with geofabric and filled with potting soil. image

I gathered the stones off the lot to create the boundary posts. This was a common way to establish fence corners on the prairies where trees for posts were rare and precious. image

My garden is paying off. These are spuds planted on Good Friday, in the Irish tradition. image

Two sides of the same coin. On the left, the garden plot being redeemed from condemned housing. On the right, formerly abandoned pasture that is being reclaimed for livestock and trees. Make opportunities, not excuses.

Phase 1 of the Re-Villagification project is going well. The buildings got dropped yesterday, general cleanup happens for the next couple days, then water hydrants get installed on Monday. image

One thing that I have observed- people thing in terms of their own finances. Our SAR unit has a variety of different levels of wealth, and a useful county budget. The poor folks hate spending money out of the budget, because they project their situation onto the SAR budget. They don’t have any money, so they act like no one has any money. The better off members act surprised that not everyone will buy quality personal gear, or support spending money to build future capability. This probably is a useful observation for many aspects of life and building.
