I'm laughing at myself really hard right now. I assumed my chassis fan died years ago and just never got around to fixing it, but as I've had some random abrupt power failures, decided to get to investigating and looked into replacing the dead fan. So I opened up the case to look at what I needed. Well, it turns out, one of the really helpful things to do, with any fan, whether it's new or 14 years old, is to PLUG THE GODDAMN THING IN. Must have neglected to plug it in when I replaced the motherboard 7 years ago or so. Still not sure why the chassis fan speed shows as 0 rpm though when it's visibly moving now that it's plugged in...guess I've got some digging to do.

@npub10uth...xdlq I was just thinking earlier today how y'all always said you'd be here even if Bitcoin went to zero, (though probably that would be the last episode), and as much as I'm not one to demand anyone work for me for free, it put a smile on my face to see the episode drop today.

@Johnathan Corgan Has there been any thought or roadmapping around #FIPS bridges to things like #cjdns? I went and showed some folks over on ##slackware on liberachat and they definitely noticed the similarity -- seems like the big differences are around DHT and the re-encryption between hops, which make cjdns better for scaling in some ways while FIPS is better at handling low resource connections like BLE and (hopefully soon) #LoRA. Spitballing here, but they got me looking at stuff I hadn't really examined and I do always like finding ways to put together complementary tools in this sort of fashion so they "cover each others' back" so to speak. I tried to find if there's been anything brought up about this with a bit of searching but not seen anything yet. I'm not the most well versed in mesh networking though; apologies if this is well trodden territory.

Did you just call Coinbase one of the best in the industry? You know FTX isn't in it anymore, right? I don't think I could name anyone worse at this point.

And, mission accomplished, way ahead of schedule. If you're running Slackware64 15.0, this has all of the files necessary to just run the fips.Slackbuild file, and will put a fips-0.5.1-x86_64-1.txz file in /tmp that you can install. You DO need to be running dnsmasq or unbound (just like on FreeBSD), and your /etc/dnsmasq.conf file does need to have your conf-dir line uncommented (conf-dir=/etc/dnsmasq.d). Make sure that 127.0.0.1 or ::1 is your first nameserver listed in /etc/resolv.conf. Beyond this, edit your /etc/fips/fips.yaml file per the instructions here:

. Start and stop the daemon with /etc/rc.d/rc.fips start|stop|restart (like any other slackware service). This isn't the most standard thing, and some may worry about it from a security perspective. It's also trivial to change if you'd like, but is handy this way because you can very quickly edit the Slackbuild script's version variable to grab the newest version (and indeed, there's already a newer one out as of 2 days ago). I doubt anyone's grabbing this because slackers don't seem to be here on nostr, but if it's useful, glad to offer it up. If anyone's running another non-systemd linux and wants some of what I learned that isn't already spelled out here, happy to chat. Also, let nobody denigrate free models. Trying to tackle porting FIPS to Slackware. To whoever put together the FreeBSD port, thank you for the piggy back ride. This should bring FIPS to Unix-like GNU/Linux, rather than whatever the fuck the systemd/Linux can be called.
