Role Ethics (Stoic)
Epictetus says: remember your roles—child, citizen, sibling, worker. Virtue is not abstract; it is how we play the part assigned without adding a second, theatrical self. Gratitude for roles is thanks that we have people to be faithful to. A role can feel like a burden until we see it as a place to practice justice and care. We do not have to love the script. We can still act well.
"Consider who you are. First of all, a human being... then a citizen of the world."
— Epictetus, Discourses II 10
