Women’s day is a perfect moment to say thank you for the endless fights of brave women and men, who supported them, many years ago. I had a privilege to meet in my life a lot of brilliant and brave people, who helped me to prevail in the most difficult times. Yes, human rights defenders also need to be defended. ☺️ The most difficult was financial isolation and understanding that your banking data is a roadmap to kill everything you built and everyone you love. I received message after message, and my heart almost stopped with fear of who else had been arrested... But I was able not only to survive thanks to #bitcoin, I try to scale and share my experience with others who financially excluded, defend developers and bitcoin from false narratives in regulations. Im forever grateful to #bitcoiners that after 6years attacks of several regimes, I still can dream, love and believe that everything is possible. Accountability to perpetrators is coming. Spring is coming. Dreams become reality. We are stronger together 🧡

I vividly remember the sense of despair I felt as a teenager and later being experienced human rights defender due to the political persecution of my family. I remember what it meant to me to receive the help and solidarity of perfect strangers to defend our rights. Over the course of the 14 years of the Open Dialogue Foundation’s work, I see myself in the eyes of the families of politically repressed individuals who are fighting for their loved ones, and I see their joy after the release of political prisoners. I deeply believe that supporting and defending people who peacefully oppose authoritarian regimes can help keep our fragile world a safe and comfortable place to live in. Entire generations have given their lives to the cause of human rights so that we can live today in safety, prosperity, comfort, and with a sense of rights and freedoms as stable as those in the United States or the European Union. But as soon as we forget the price and the need to protect our rights, regimes immediately take advantage of the situation. The ease with which your European bank account can become a weapon to attack, kidnap, and persecute all your loved ones is just one example. “Women rights” and “fight with extremism” in #Kazakhstan at one picture: 🔻 Sandugash #Turlibekova, a single mother of five, in a small town in #Kazakhstan. Sandugash, as a "very dangerous criminal," a criminal case was opened against her & she was detained by a local SWAT team in front of her 5 kids. Her crime? Being an admin of a WhatsApp group for mothers with many children, where she criticized the authorities for violating their rights. 🔻This photo illustrates “protection of women rights” in #Kazakhstan in practice, an in fact a bright example of abuse of #FATF recommendations by dictators to silent critics. It is just one of thousands cases for the last years of arbitrary arrests/harassment against critics of Tokayev’s regime. 🔻The next step: not only the arbitrary arrest of Sandugash, but total financial exclusion for her and her family members/associates under pretext of the fighting with extremists activities in Kazakhstan.

I'm very grateful to @Frank Corva and #ForbesCrypto for helping us highlight financial exclusion and transnational repression as a result of dictators abusing #AML/CFT laws. 🙏 To prevent such abuses we share six messages while meeting with #EU and #US policymakers: 📌As human rights defenders, we work with very sensitive information, and financial information is the most sensitive information. 📌Authoritarian regimes and dictatorships use this information both domestically and transnationally to destroy activists, journalists, women's rights organizations, and #LGBT rights organizations. 📌Banking privacy doesn't exist any more: personally I, Open Dialogue Foundation and members of #BTC Coalition testified to the EU and US institutions about such abuses. 📌#Bitcoin and self-custody privacy-protecting payment instruments/wallets are the only tools we can use to uphold human rights. 📌In seven reports we documented how authoritarian regimes use their financial institutions to circumvent sanctions to support each other and avoid accountability for human rights violations. 📌Bitcoin blockchain technology #SimpleProof is an example of how bitcoin can help protect election results from fraud and malicious #AI influence (#Guatemala 's case). 📍Solutions: ▪️G7 policymakers should use neutral regulatory language when it comes to #freedomtech, #bitcoin, privacy payment/crowdfunding instruments. ▪️G7 policymakers should review travel rule and stop sharing financial intelligence knowledge with authoritarian governments to prevent abuses. What @sms witnessed can come to our reality in the #EU and #US: 🤯if no one would come to elect and participate in the elections with clear positions in defense of privacy, human rights and especially financial privacy. 🤯if majority of us stays silent to the regulatory labeling #freedomtech as instruments for “illicit activity, threats for environment or energy security“. What everyone can do: 🔻Be vocal and support during elections period those politicians and groups who oppose such false narratives and support human rights not in the claim but with specific programs. 🔻Educate both politicians and journalists about the abuses of AML/CFT laws by dictatorship and weaponization of banking data. 🔻Ask politicians from you constituency about that issues as a condition for your support to elect them. Be vocal! In doing so you protect developers of freedom technologies and bitcoin specifically - they will be targeted first of all in case of adoption of negative regulatory language to set up a chilling effect on the industry.
