A trip to Nairobi - Dec 6, 2024
Dec 5 of my Nairobi journal:
Waking up to BTC 102k USD, we started the day with a mini breakfast on the balcony, observing the progress on the construction site below. I messaged a friend to see if he could assist with a P2P swap BTC to KES.
Afterwards, we had lunch, and surprisingly, the cleaner Sheila came by for a quick clean although this wasn’t announced and disrupted our work set up.
We then went through my slides to prepare for the ‘Bitcoin for Beginners’ workshop next week, filtering what is essential and what is too much into detail and overwhelming for people.
At 3:30 pm, we left for the initial meetup of queer female Bitcoiners at a coworking space in CBD. People shared their stories of being discriminated, almost banned from school, harassed and beaten up on the way to university, their families rejecting them and how females are obliged to pay “Black tax” (a monthly financial contribution to their families), but are not allowed to inherit any property and are excluded from the opportunity to get credit at a bank. It was quite moving to witness this coming together. We felt honored to have been invited to this first meeting, hoping more will follow.
The meeting ended at 6:30 pm, and we headed back to our AirBnB.

Constantly working for Bitcoin. Working on new videos demonstrating Bitcoin‘s impact in South Africa, where people earn and spend it.
This is Rene from SimplySow a NPO supporting abandoned babies.

Another day in Kenya:
We had some hiccups with Tando payments, paid twice, but ended up with Kenyan coffee beans and a decaf Americano for me as compensation…..

Another day in Nairobi with a visit of Marcel Lorraine, founder of Bitcoin Dada. She’s sharing her story, the economic challenges for women and how they can overcome those by using Bitcoin.
Also she founded DadaDevs, an initiative that educates female Bitcoin devs in Kenya.

Do not use wallets that link your phone number or email with your bitcoin!!
There are enough wallets not requiring personal information.
…. And again Ledger hardware wallets are involved. Must be the 3 or 4th time that they leaked customer data. View quoted note →
Paying for groceries at the supermarket in South Africa with self-custodied Lightning aka Bitcoin, while people still believe it’s just a tool for speculation.
The future is already here it’s just unevenly distributed.

Here is Nov 30 from my Nairobi journal including an interview with @Tando.me

I started embedding #NOSTR notes on my website instead of tweets.
Nostr first.

Any voting mechanism based on money is ultimately rigged. Like Proof of Stake. It just perpetuates that the wealth stays with the wealthy (overwhelmingly in male hands) who get more wealthy over time.
It‘s not a Trump pump!
Just the usual halving cycle 🤷♂️
What Bitcoin does.
Been a guest at the recent BitDevs Nairobi socratic seminar. We've been discussing responsible Bitcoin development, privacy and uncensorability. Thanks @okjodom for the invite. @Tando.me @BITCOIN DADA

Exploring Nairobi we Bitcoin for Fairness met the Tando team who released a fantastic app!
30 Mio. ppl in Kenya can now be paid with #Lightning and receive KES in their M-Pesa account. Basically you can pay everything with #bitcoin and the recipient doesn't need to learn anything about it. It is so important in countries where people live from paycheck to paycheck, they need to be able to spend their bitcoin.
I confirm it works like a charm, paid taxi drivers for groceries, eating dinner in a restaurant etc.
