We paint shacks because it helps our circular economy project. It gives us a constructive channel through which to circulate sats into the local economy. Residents of painted shacks receive a stipend of 7,000 sats/week, which they only receive as long they: 1. Do not convert to fiat, whether they choose to save or spend, it must happen with sats. 2. Keep the area clean, and free from rubbish and pollution. No regular cleaning, no sats. It also brings some colour to a bleak environment. It adds some pride to otherwise unimpressive living conditions. It draws attention to our project, and makes for great photos and videos when people visit. We have many reasons for doing this. And. As a happy side effect, it also helps promote some really cool Bitcoin projects, like @npub17tyk...3mgl !!

Stoked!! It’s amazing to have the @Tando.me logo displayed on one of the shacks! If you’re wondering what they do, it’s a Kenyan mobile app that allows you to spend Bitcoin through the Lightning Network, while merchants receive Kenyan Shillings directly into their M-Pesa (mobile money) wallets. You pay in BTC, they get KES instantly, with zero fees, no need for them to set up anything. And everyone accepts Mpesa. You can literally live almost entirely on Bitcoin in Kenya.

With support from Bitcoin Beach we helped kick-start 23 circular economy projects across the African continent throughout 2023 - 2025. I'm considering the idea of planning an extended trip in 2026, to visit as many of these projects as possible. Maybe 2 -3 weeks, visiting 10 - 15 projects, something like that. If we turned this into an organized group thing, who'd be keen to join? It's just an idea for now, nothing at all confirmed, but trying to gauge interest. image

Whenever you're spending sats, someone is earning sats. Think about that.

Local politicians visiting our project are introduced to Bitcoin as a medium of exchange first. With the end-goal being saving in Bitcoin as a means to personal empowerment.

Our youngest competitor from The Surfer Kids, Avethandwa (11) surfing at the final junior trials today, before district team selection. He's got a very good chance to be included in the team and will almost certainly compete at the South African Champs in Oct!

Bitcoin being borderless has to be one of its coolest features. Imagine a world where the playing field is leveled by a money that is global.

I think someone is trying to tell us something. First, our @AdoptingBitcoinCapeTown account gets suspended from X, just three days before the January 2025 event. No explanation, despite multiple inquiries. Fortunately we already had Nostr. And we kept posting updates there throughout the conference. Then, after much internal debate, the organizing team decides to start a new X account, to promote the 2026 conference to the widest audience possible... We even committed the cardinal sin of joining Facebook, Instagram and (shock, horror!!!) TikTok. To that end, we appointed a social media manager: @Man Like Kweks, who's from Tanzania, to get the word out as far as possible. We want new people (not yet into Bitcoin) to attend the conference. And as soon as we did.... X gets blocked in Tanzania. Not too mention, Kwek's favorite social media is Nostr. He has more followers here, than anywhere else... So, what's the moral of the story here? You tell me.
