OK I can't keep up with the Nostr drama. What's the conclusion? Do we hate Alby or not?
Just saying, because I just recently installed Alby Hub (which wasn't a happy process, as I posted), Alby extension is how I log in, Alby wallet is what I use for LN, and my NIP-05 Nostr address is with Alby too.
It's nothing insurmountable I guess. I just want to know if I should switch or not.

I really don’t understand what the problem is. This thing is so easy to self-host on an old spare machine… I don’t get it.
honest answers only please.

Nah, they make it so you can self host Alby Hub
We don’t hate Alby because they did this:

I love Alby. Didn’t even know people were getting panties in a bunch about something. Got a TLDR?
Just got Alby’s email about officially ending their custodial wallet service in January. End of an era. Can’t really justify the cost of Alby Hub or running fully self-custodial just for zaps though.

CoinOS is the new Wallet of Satoshi, but better! And alby is cool for the tech savvy or business owner, but not for the pleb who just wants to zap and be zapped on nostr
Got it! Looks like I'm OK and I can save myself the hassle. For now!
Everyone thinks they're being rug-pulled into a subscription; they don't understand the ease with which you can add alby hub to a node you run yourself and have nothing change
As I am biased I should leave it up to others to reply, but it's only:
We want users to move to a self-custodial Alby Hub (as you already have used afaik). Our full focus is on Alby Hub and we think it's ready and easy to use.
Old, legacy users which use the shared Alby node will have to switch. (as it has been for all new users since 2024)
Yeah, thanks to another reply I already determined I'm sticking around. Cheers
I love Alby. Can’t justify the cost of Alby Hub. Don’t currently need to run my own node.
I totally get you.
Setting up Alby Hub was very simple though, and I don't pay anything. I just run it on the same 10 year old machine on which I run my BTC node. It doesn't seem to affect or take up resources significantly and I have one channel that doesn't represent any work (at least until now).
Opening that one channel was excessively expensive since it's just for the zaps here, and it was *not* something I would have done had I known better -- I blame their poor onboarding for it. But I think you're savvy enough to save yourself that type of problem.
I’ve run a node before. I intentionally choose not to right now because I know it’s overkill and too expensive for what I need. Most people are in my category. Not sure why people get offended about that lol
Me neither!
I decided to run my own node and now to set up Alby Hub because I'm a curious person and to impress my friends. But I totally know it's overkill too.
Some people also oversimplify self custody lightning into all or nothing, and it doesn’t need to be that. I use a mix of self custody “node in phone” wallets, liquid, and then custodial services are primarily for zaps. Each use case can have a different solution depending on the situation/need. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing.
my panties are only in a bunch if i see react code one more time 😂
Allow me to assist with the code of our people
void unbunch_panties(struct body_clothing* clothing)
{
if(clothing->lower_body.panties & PANTIE_STATUS_BUNCHED)
{
clothing->lower_body.panties &= ~PANTIE_STATUS_BUNCHED;
}
}
