For an artist who paints, if the only goal becomes 'selling', the canvas dries up and so does his soul. You have to paint to say something that resembles us; every painting must contain a little bit of ourselves. Sales follow when there is truth, not when there is hunger. However, there is also another, harsher truth: hunger really does exist. It is not romantic to ignore it. An artist who has to pay the rent is not 'less pure'. He is only human.
