Yesterday’s Proof of Work session with Win Ko Ko Aung from the Human Rights Foundation (HRF) and Judy from the Bitcoin Development Fund (BDF) was truly inspiring and insightful. The session focused on a powerful topic: “Bitcoin & Human Rights”, highlighting how Bitcoin is not just a technological innovation, but a tool for financial freedom, human dignity, and resistance to oppression. Win Ko Ko Aung shared his experience and knowledge on how Bitcoin empowers individuals living under authoritarian regimes, facing censorship, inflation, or restricted financial systems. He emphasized how people in countries with repressive governments can use Bitcoin as a means of uncensorable, borderless, and open financial access. Judy also brought valuable insight into the Bitcoin Development Fund, which supports developers and communities across the globe working to grow Bitcoin adoption responsibly. She encouraged participants to explore the resources and funding opportunities available through the BDF and HRF, especially for those working on projects related to education, human rights, and open-source Bitcoin development. The session was very interactive, with amazing engagement from students across Tanzania and other African nations. Questions were asked, ideas were shared, and a deeper understanding of the global impact of Bitcoin was gained by all attendees.
