No, it's better to self host xmpp, matrix and run a simplex relay. So you don't need to trust anybody and contribute to decentralize the web.

Can one self-host a threema server?
No, xmpp and simplex do not leak metadata.
I don't find the funding of VillageGlobal for Simplex concerning. The founder clearly said that VG does not make any operational decisions and they are just an investor. Simplex has had plans on how to monetize corporate clients from the early days and that's what VG is interested in. Returns from that business model.
Besides that: Simplex is open source and you can host your own servers, that way nobody at simplex even knows you use their app and can't get any data from you.
