Just running a free and simple relay is probably the easiest way to do it. I would start playing with stirfry if you're interested. You can modify it fairly easy. Like for instance, I'm running a spam filter in front of my free relay. It's taught me a lot about how to combat spam.

I need to get my relay running, I have run one before and have the uno.dog domain to run it on and a bunch of other domains I can use. Need to fix my computer first.
