Welcome to another day of I thought I was in a modern country. Today I had one goal…. Get a phone number! I go to the store when they open, “sorry we are busy” (there is no one in the store except the 5 staff) I was told to come back at 4pm. I arrived at the allotted time to be told “sorry you don’t have an appointment “ I decided to stay and not get messed around. 10 minutes later my appointment is found and we start the process and get told that I can get a Samsung phone for 11yen as I’m a new customer.
90 minutes later I’m told that I can’t get the 11yen phone just as I’m about to sign.
The end result no phone and no phone number. This was another 6 hour ordeal.
I’m done with the circus this week and will begin again on Monday 🤪

I would look for another merchant to give my business to.
Unfortunately in Japan this seems to be normal. I love the country and the people but living here has constant challenges
I want to Japan a few years ago. It seems like they were about 20 years ahead of the rest of the world in the 90s but it froze there. So now they’re actually behind the rest of the world. I listened to a podcast (can’t remember which) but he was talking about how after Japan’s economic bubble burst in the 90s it’s been government “investment” through 0% interest rates that’s kept the economy ticking along but everyone is just marking time. There’s literally no incentive to innovate, and the economy is dragged along by low interest borrowing to fund zombie companies to keep people in work.
Japan still looks modern on the surface but your right, the country is stuck in the 90’s. Business still uses fax machines and if you mention Bitcoin you’ve lost them completely
Maybe you could give a try with this : a phone number (DID) with voip.ms (and then an eSIM if needed, possibly with : lnvpn.net )
