see you there!
I know it is totally unnecessary, but I'm learning how to read and pronounce hiragana for nostrasia.
Disclaimer: I won't be able to write it, I won't know katakana or kanji, I will only know the meaning of a few dozen words and terms, I will rely primarily on google translate, flashcards, OSM maps, and other people's knowledge of English.
As someone who loved there for 8 years and speaks JP well enough—I would recommend Katakana. You at least get the loan words. Hiragana is mostly for conjugations and particles. Often useless without knowing the Kanji stem. In any case, I congratulate your PoW my friend.
*lived ^^;
I've been having a lot of fun teaching myself to write katakana with this app https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.Obenkyo
Although as you said writing is probably unnecessary for beginners
I'm still slowly learning to read/pronounce hiragana (not to write it yet). I've got two guides and a phone app to quiz me. I could have done this a lot faster if I made more time for it, but I've learned about 70% of it so far. Katakana is probably more useful given it encodes the foreign words that I would likely understand... Maybe I'll learn it too.
