I’d add that I don’t even trust myself not to leave cash in my pockets of my jeans that go in the washing machine.

Well, a better analogy would be whether you trust that Visa will give your money to the marchant each time you pay for something or just take the amount from you, pocket it, and leave you in an awkward position.
EVEN IF YOU USED AN INTERMEDIARY to mitigate the risk, only to learn that the intermediary had no power to begin with.
