The causeway prevents water from mixing, resulting in different salinity levels and algae growth, which can be seen as color variations. Halophiles are microorganisms that contribute to the lake’s pink hue in the northern section. The lake is between 3.5 to 8 times saltier than the ocean.
The lake has been called "America's Dead Sea" and provides a habitat for millions of native birds, brine shrimp, shorebirds, and waterfowl, including the largest staging population of Wilson's phalarope in the world.
