But how would you then use the SAME gpg key to sign commits...? I know criminals are notoriously stupid, but creating an unrelated pseudonym seems like the very first thing somebody trying to introduce an exploit would do.

An innocent mistake exploited by an unknown outsider is plausible, but an inside job seems far more probable at this point.
