The metrics aren't the same
The community isn't the same
The value isn't the same
There's no 1:1 comparison with platform social media and I think we do ourselves a disservice by looking at legacy metrics as the most important. That doesn't mean they cant be useful in some ways, but I think we should recognize just how much noise there is in a typical network that makes a useful comparison extremely difficult.
Especially when what you get out of it, how likely your followers are to see your content, and the level of connection to the community can vary so greatly.

In my mind, there is no real comparison between nostr and legacy social. The atmosphere is so much better here than say X. We should not even try to replicate the old social. Just forge ahead and form something new.
My two sats…
I've just started using nostr after taking the orange pill. I've had the self realisation that those in power don't care for me and my family and therefore I seek truth in anyway I can
Yep. Nostr feels like a level playing field. Like I don’t have to try to outsmart some algorithm to find and actually connect with people I care to engage with and who bring value to my life. Nostr is awesome and in a different league.
It would be interesting to see the difference if your follower count maxed out at something like the Dunbar number: aka150. You would know you have connection to some people to know the thing works, but no one would be able to discuss numbers beyond that.
Perhaps it would not be great for companies trying to sell stuff because they cant tell the marketing department the numbers but then again I thought the early internet was better in many ways than the over commercialised mess we have now.
I get it, why some entities want a high following number, but ordinary people? Why should I care for x people following me, when no engagement is there? If there is no algorithm highlighting the most followed, most liked, most whatever, it doesn't matter. We should focus on discovery, recommendation, curation. I don't want to see 1000 bullshit posts in my feed, but maybe someone does. I like to have high signal and low noise. Maybe heavy social media user want to know every new meme in existence. It should be easy to curate your feed very individually. Maybe there is a friend of a friend somewhere that I would find interesting, but I will never get to know this friend.
