Absolutely ridiculous. So glad I cut my tether to Apple last year. Now I try to stick with a separate service per need instead of putting all my eggs in the same basket. Worst case scenario I can switch out individual services if something bad happens or if any of the services become bad actors. The scary thing about Apple and Google is that many people literally have their entire digital lives with them.

Apple has reportedly been ordered by the UK government to create a backdoor that would give security officials access to users’ encrypted iCloud backups. If implemented, British security services would have access to the backups of any user worldwide, not just Brits, and Apple would not be permitted to alert users that their encryption was compromised. https://www.theverge.com/news/608145/apple-uk-icloud-encrypted-backups-spying-snoopers-charter

I just ended up getting a really cheap Pixel 6a just in case I didn't like it. Still using it, it does the job. Would I again? Haha I wouldn't want to, the switch was rough and inconvenient. But morally yeah I would do it again.

Vendor lock in is crazy. I switched back to Android when I saw the UK thing and got a pixel on discount. Used the Fiat I saved to stack. However, the toughest part is my notes app. I use obsidian which synced easily with iCloud. Im looking for an android alternative. Does know of a good way to sync obsidian notes with PC?
Does Obsidian just need some cloud drive type service to get sync working?. Perhaps Proton Drive could be what you're looking for. Someone who I think uses Graphene and Obsidian from past posts is @Laser - maybe he will have a better solution.
I meant would you use that hardware again 😆 but good to know you would punish yourself all over again for moral reasons 🤗
It sure is. It just works so damn well if you go all-in, which is the scary part.

Apparently Proton Drive is not yet supported which is a damn shame. They also don't have an incentive to support it anytime soon since they acquired standard notes. This probably means they'll develop a notes app of their own / potentially revamp standard notes.
I use Obsidian Sync, which is a service that'll shuttle your files between your devices in a private, secure way. Moving my household's knowledge base to markdown files was a PITA but it means we'll never become captive to another platform again.
