Should a singer "riff" on the national anthem?
Singing the anthem at the beginning of a sportball event has become a platform for fading "artists" or wannabe stars to showcase their ability to "create" a unique take on the song standard.
Do you think it's acceptable or even enjoyable when a singer deviates considerably from the tune in order to show off their talent in runs or worse vocal gimmicks?
My 2 sats: Whitney Houston's rendition of Star Spangled Banner at Super Bowl '91 set the bar. Just enough subtle changes to make it her signature, while keeping the cadence of the song true to its composition.
