I'm still not clued up enough to take a side on this, so I'd love to hear more principled or philosophical arguments rather than ad-hominem ones from those in the thick of it.

You misunderstood my post if you think I'm making any arguments about the debate.
The debate was over 6 months ago, I'm simply offering my analysis of why one faction appears to be acting illogically.
