The more I think about Nostr the more it blows my mind. I can just say whatever crazy shit I want and there’s like no guardrails or mods—it’s just out there, and people will actually see it. No one appreciates just how powerful this is, how important it is, monumental even. It creates a totally new possibility for the social web, which is really something else entirely. It’s the possibility of a new world in which people own their data; their information. No longer to be exploited, or owned, people can really say whatever they want. And that is truly extraordinary.

YES! Couldn’t sleep for days when I first realized just how many second+ order effects Nostr has.
What is even crazier - at least to me - is that this way of communicating as you’ve described was actually normal not to long ago. Maybe 20 years ago.

I can say GFY or God bless and GM☕️. And there’s no one to report me to
Even more ironic, as someone typing from Shanghai, is how over that same 20 years all I’ve witnessed is how more Chinese the American institutions have become. And still the American populace remains willfully unaware.

It's gonna get really neat when the free communication leads to fundamental shifts in association, organization, and economic activity. This is just the teaser.
but we don't own our data on Nostr. The vast majority of people doesn't run relays and even those who do copy their daya to a dozen other relays. All data here is free to be exploited by anyone who wants. We can't even revoke data here. If you say something that you later regret, you are screwed.
NOSTR is not priced in. Socials clones were just the concept projects - NOSTR is the reputational internet. Just waiting for the tools to arrive.
nah just like internet, some tools are one to many, and some are one to one, and more secure Data vending machines arent even new on nostr, people alreasy showing you can buy or sell data. It's not if its free or not - its the right to do it. And the impossibility of being stopped.
I know, I wasn't trying to say that Nostr is bad because of this, but saying "we own our data" here doesn't seem right. For this, all data would have to be encrypted and we would have system where we can set who is able to decrypt the data and for how long. Would be a very different network (and maybe could even be built on top of Nostr).
It seems wrong to me at some level. Nothing will be done about crime on Nostr? Everything goes, bestiality etc? That is the main problem with Telegram and X, there’s so much scam and crime it’s unusable.
On the converse. There is also no way to remove an undesirable post you made, as all delete protocol options are cooperative only. Think about that WRT politicians scrubbing history.
With great freedom comes great responsibility… freedom of speech does not come with freedom of consequence.
“With great power comes great responsibility”. Some people think they are free of any consequence and can do anything with impunity. Nostr, like bitcoin, is an open protocol though and very easy to link to real world people when for example people put their npubs on X linking themselves to locations and accounts.
Do we actually believe X posts/DMs or Telegram posts/DMs etc are actually deleted as well? It's cool that we hit delete and it disappears in front of our eyes but... just saying.
It’s such a beautiful thing… literally like someone was sitting on my chest and I didn’t even realize it
I think it’s the same way for how I feel about photography here at NOICE. The work we publish is very much against the norm but well respected now after years of doing this. Our latest publication is a testament of us working on the fringes.

exactly. and where is the hatred, the violence, the negativity experienced on X? we don't know how NOSTR will evolve of course but for now doesn't feel like the internet in the late 90s? and to those politicians who want to save us from ourselves, we can just say chill!

Kinda reminds me of the first time I sent bitcoin to someone. No middle men, no banks, no permission.

I was talking to a friend about how important NOSTR is and she was freaking out. Saying “So I guess now people can incite a riot”. That person doesn’t realize that Freedom is not safe, and neither is “security” provided by big central government.

It is a case of the frog in the pot… so slow it just isn’t noticed.
