There's also GMRS that has no test in the US, just a licence fee. In Canada it is unlicensed, but at lower power levels. I fuck around with it on a handheld radio (at higher than allowed power levels) and haven't found out yet 👀

After I got my Technical license, saw what bands I was allowed to use, and saw what was needed to get a General license, I was mad at myself for not doing both tests the same day. If you're able to learn what it takes to get a Tech license, it's only a few more to get General, and you'll have more than one band for voice comminication. This was a long time ago, so maybe the FCC has changed things to make the Tech license practical. It's worth looking into before you commit to a test. The Advanced license will give you a few more bands, but it's mostly acquired to play with satellite dishes.
