It appears that tagging is the culprit behind the app crashes, not the replies. According to a credible source, tagging all followers shouldn't break clients, but an auto reply bot accidentally tagging may be the cause of the issue. This is supported by the fact that blocking the auto reply bot seems to prevent app crashes.
