It might sound crazy and unfeasible, but maybe if you have a key for a game, you could join a P2P-style network, like torrent, to keep hosting the game download. That way, everyone who owns a key could act as their own server and help preserve it.

Not crazy. That's part of the plan actually (blossom, torrent, anything else that comes along if it's good).
Game files/builds have their hash, so you know you're getting the proper files (assuming the logging feature gets implemented).
Blossom part is done pretty much (on deg mods soon), one thing that's left there (before it goes live or future update) is a mechanism to keep a log of changes to the downloads section (wouldn't capture all changes, but better than nothing).
The challenge after that release is having more people start running blossom serves and start backing up mods they like. Needs code cleanup and publishing a guide, and overtime taking more development and business steps. This is more like challenge to overcome overtime.
While that's happening, the torrent support update would be out.
