I'm still trying to wrap my head around it all.
The one logical thing that perplexed me is why is space dark if all the light we receive on earth comes from the sun? Shouldn't it be bright in space based on that idea

Light traveling is invisible. You need something to absorb the light to be visible. Space is empty and nothing absorbs the light.
If you have a laser you can shine it and you won’t see the beam unless there is dust or smoke. Space needs the same thing. Dust in space is really cool. Before JBP broke down:
