Imo freemium/premium model is best for relays. Because people would prefer popular relays to be able to read everything and to be heard by all, relays should try to serve as many people as possible. Freemium allows relays to do that also charge for features to stay alive. Some premium (paid) features that may be implemented: - Store all my notes on the relay for as long as the premium is active and don't "recycle". My notes will live on the relay while others are recycled to open up space. This doesn't change the behavior of deletion. If I want to delete a note it will be honored. - Backup all my notes in another location for added redundancy. My notes will be saved in another machine if the relay machine fails. - Higher post (write) limits. I will be able to write more notes to the relay while others are rate limited and slowed down. - Higher note size limit. I will be able to store longer texts or longer notes. I can store bigger pictures within the notes. If I start following hundreds of people or more I will be able to save the contact list on the relay. - Submit my notes to other popular relays. Depending on which relays are popular and easily allowing integration, my notes will be broadcasted to other relays. My reach will be more. - My notes won't be marked as spam easily. Even though lots of malicious users start falsely reporting me, they will be ignored, I will still be able to write to the relay. - I should be able to download my notes. - Send me a DM if my notes are not saved on the relay when I post, for reasons like spam, profanity or adult filter, and explain why they are not saved. This will allow me to see immediately why my posts are rejected. - Delete my DM's after a week or a specified time. - Don't store my notes after 1 day and delete. Some people want their notes to disappear. (This feature will disable the feature that stores the notes for a long time.) - Send me a DM when someone reports me. - Higher concurrent query (read) limits. I can open more connections to the relay and I will browse Nostr faster. This will need authentication and some NIPs. Maybe for future. - Make my IP private. My IP will still be used to successfully combat spam but after that step it won't be stored as is but will be converted to a hash version so others cannot recover my IP from logs. Any other features that make sense?

Running relays does not cost much compared to client development costs or relay development costs. But yes there should be an economy starting for things to be sustainable in the long run. Right now a dozen (for the sake of decentralization) 20$ / month machines can carry nostr. Maybe add couple 30$ "historical" relays to keep the old notes and that's it. There are not many notes. "Zap sharing" was done by snort and I got some zaps from there. Cool feature. I think relays should adopt freemium/premium model. What do you think? View quoted note โ†’
