Only if you want. Reading code doesn't mean you have to write code. Understanding how a protocol works technically doesn't mean you have to develop code for the protocol.

Not everyone can read code. Even if everyone could read code, not everyone would be able to read code of that complexity. Even among people who could read code of that complexity, do you think that they would all want to read all of that code? No. That's like rewriting code instead of using a library. It's unnecessarily repeated work. If we want Bitcoin to be adopted by the average person, it has to be usable by the average person.

GM History shows new classes of society emerge from literacy and education. Don't be a second class citizen in Bitcoin. Learn to read code. Study Bitcoin. Or trust your dev literate overlords and submit to their power.

Why is this a bad idea? You definitely should understand every procedure you undergo.

I guess what I’m trying to say is this: it’s probable that not everyone will be able to understand all that code. Even the ones who could (including me) would rather spend that significant amount of time doing something else. A better analogy would be a C compiler: you don’t need to read the code of a C compiler to be able to write C. If you had told programmers at the time that C was being adopted that they had to read and understand the compiler in order to use the language, they probably wouldn’t have used the language. I’m not arguing that we should enstupidify Bitcoin. I’m against enstupidification of any sort. I’m saying that if we want “people” to use Bitcoin, we need to make it possible to understand without requiring weeks of study. If we want Bitcoin to be adopted, it has to be as easy to use as the fiat it’s replacing.

Your level of technical literacy direcrly correlates to your level of sovereignty. Ease of use has nothing to do with it.
