Costa Rican words that are good to know:
Pura Vida
As most of you probably already know, this is a saying in Costa Rica that translates to "Pure Life". People use it in many ways. It can mean hello and good bye, how are you?, life is good, no worries, etc. It describes a way of life. A slower pace, where people make a point to enjoy themselves. The amazing weather and nature probably has something to do with the laid back attitude of the Costa Ricans. Something we should all learn to appreciate.
Mae
This is used like "Dude". Pura Vida Mae!
Tuanis
There isn't a perfect translation for this, but its used like " dope" or "chill". It's a term often used by surfers. Honestly, a good translation would also be this emoji 🤙
Soda
A soda is a traditional Costa Rican restaurant serving typical food. Sort of like " Diner" in the USA is a place that serves typical American food. Make sure to order the standard rice and bean breakfast called Gallo Pinto, or a Casado for lunch, which is a protein, rice, beans and a salad, all on one plate. Other typical foods include Olla de Carne, a hearty soup with meat and vegetables and Arroz con Pollo (or Camarones or Mariscos), which is a rice dish with protein mixed in (chicken, shrimp, mixed seafood, typically)
Tico
This is a term to refer to Costa Ricans, used by Costa Ricans and foreigners. This term came from the way Costa Ricans talk, by adding tico to the end of certain words. For example, when describing a small amount you would say it is "Poquito", but many Costa Ricans will say "Poquitico". After many years of this, Costa Ricans, and latin Americans generally, started referring to Costa Ricans as Ticos.

Thanks for the explanations! Might have to move to Costa Rica! At least trying to live the PV 😄
Cool! I hope to visit one day.
Gallo pinto is 🔥. Had that every day for breakfast with eggs and bacon when I visited.
Good list. As a Tico, I can confirm. Tuanis, Mae!
Dang def need to start using these. Thanks 😊
⚡️🤙⚡️
Interesting 💫
Tuanis is used universally by all ticos. It's not a surfer thing or anything.
🤙 thanks. I have some more info i plan to post periodically.
Hey! In my experience in and around San Jose I dont hear tuanis much. Some , but not much like pura vida or mae. Near the beach I notice an increase. 🤙
🤙
Gracias mae! 🤙
🤙
Its a beautiful place I highly recommend checking it out. Dm if you have any questions. Pura vida! 🤙
🤙
Oh yes, pura vida and mae are used much more than tuanis.
Tuanis is also more "informal", most commonly used among men and buddies, while pura vida is more widely used by everyone under almost any circumstance.
Thanks to all who engaged! Ill post more helpful info periodically. 🤙
