There are obviously several levels of “well,” but I wouldn’t say that knowing notes is necessary for most of them.
Speaking of systems, I remember tabs used to be a handy thing for (mainly rock-oriented) guitar playing.
But I agree, instructors should start with 2–3 easy and cool-sounding songs to get the beginner going and build from there. :)
