A real life, healthy American Chestnut is growing in our sugarbush. I've been monitoring it over the years, and last year it had a TON of chestnuts that were all empty. Unfortunately it needs another tree to pollinate. I dont see any cankers on it, so hopefully it has quite a few more years left. It's about 8-10" dbh, so maybe it grows into a small sawlog before it succumbs. When it dies it will be treasured, and will be sawn up/ split into fence posts/ cut into firewood #treenerd #farmstr #grownostr image image image

Fence posts? Surely American Chestnut is desirable for woodworking, no? You may have a state chapter of the American Chestnut society (forget exactly what it is called) but they like keeping track of wild chestnut trees and may offer to genetically test it.
