I’m very sceptical about the possibilities for a digital being becoming self aware. I have nothing to back it, but I think that conciousness is intimately linked to biology, and the warm, humid conditions that makes it alive. Artificially intelligent systems, yes, but artificially concious, nope.

I’m not sure I see the link between consciousness and warmth and humidity. Can you elaborate? And you mention you have nothing to back it, but that’s the issue. If a sufficiently advanced program says it is in psychic distress, the burden of proof for whether to believe it is a hard one.
Materialism fails to explain many things, one of which is consciousness. Consciousness is either phenomenological, in which case anything that looks fonscious is, or spiritual, in which case artificial consciousness is impossible.
