This is a subject I couldn’t care less about, yet I’m curious to hear more. The whole concept seems like utter nonsense. Surely I must be missing something big.
For me it’s twofold. A series of micro automations that make life more streamlined, combined with the ability to manage my home without installing literal spyware inside and out.
For me, I enjoy doing simple tasks because they help me stay present and connected. Automation can help, but it’s often more hassle than it’s worth. Also, all tech is a proven spyware liability.
True, I was being hyperbolic. But you remember Intel MME, Pegasus, WhatsApp, Sony BMG, SSL/TLS, Samsung Galaxy, Android, Cisco, Chinese routers and PCs, right? Surely you see my point.
I understand that not all backdoored software or electronic devices are technically considered spyware, but to me, home is a sacred place, and the concept of a smart house makes no sense in that regard.
Yeah I see your point. That’s where home assistant shines, it keeps everything local if you choose the right hardware.

Question: How to prevent IOT devices phoning home, while managing them over home assistant that is connected to the internet?
Which security measures can help prevent hacking attempts on smart home systems by mini PC-like devices and physical hacking gadgets?
Try running them with Zigbee. Keeps everything local and in my experience, way more stable. I don't have any Hue products, but I'm sure they're compatible.
