Submission by Ricky Lorenzo:
"I've been shooting photographs since I was 16 years old using my great uncle's Canon AE1, which he bought in Korea when he was in the army. When I started shooting, I definitely had no idea what I was looking for. I took out a bunch of photobooks from the library and nothing really caught my eye. Seemed boring, but then a friend showed me William Eggleston and it changed my entire perspective.
At 36, I'm still learning, but it has been fun seeing my vision change from then to now. As an aging person with depression, I tend to look for the beauty and humor in every day encounters. This series of photos are a batch of my favorites from the last couple of years. I like to joke that I travel alot and visit many places and these are the types of photos I typically come home with from my trip. My parents and friends don't understand, but I'm not looking for the same things they are. I'm more interested in the way light hits an overfilled garbage in Times Square than I am the people I'm surrounded by".
