What happened: The Tapie affair was a long-running financial case that involved allegations of corruption and political influence in France. Tapie was a convicted criminal himself, formerly a Socialist minister who later switched sides and backed the Centre-right. Christine Lagarde decided to allow a dispute over Tapie's sale of the Adidas sports brand to Credit Lyonnais bank to be resolved by a rarely used private arbitration panel, instead of through the courts. The panel awarded Tapie 400 million funded by taxpayers' money. A court later reversed the decision in 2015 and ordered Tapie to return the sum with interest. In 2016, Lagarde was charged with "negligence" over the payout to Tapie, and she was found guilty.
